AN action-packed weekend of racing at the Biggleswade Open Meet saw 24 Lincoln Vulcans swimmers return with a host of medals and personal triumphs.

Coaches Paul Lovell and Andrew Mason were delighted with the terrific team spirit and overall performance with more than 100 personal best swims from 140 races.

With fewer senior swimmers than in previous years due to the impending Zonal Meet at Corby, the pressure was on the junior members to deliver good performances and make progress towards qualification at the 2011 Midland Championships.

A total of 23 Midland qualifying times were achieved by swimmers from the age group squad with a further 20-plus performances falling within a few seconds of Midland level. A number of swimmers who had modestly hoped to collect their first Midland time finished the meet within striking distance of several qualification marks.

Lincoln Vulcans are now expecting to take a large squad to the Regional Championships in June when these times are achieved at the County Championships in March.

Some of the swimmers were experiencing their first two-day meet at this level and the 12-hour days on poolside can really take their toll on swimmers.

However, the young swimmers collected almost 50 medals with an impressive 35 first or second places. The stand out performance went to Tara Haworth, who finished the meet as top girl. With the Lincolnshire County Championships just over a month away, the squad will be looking to build on the successful weekend and use the Counties as a launch pad to further Midland qualifications.

Head coach Fred Furniss said: "The younger swimmers delivered another tremendous performance at the open meet.

"We expect the strong progress to continue in the next few months and to attend the Midland Regional Championships in Coventry with a large contingent of age group swimmers."
