On Saturday Lincoln Vulcans hosted their annual Level 1 Open Meet at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. The event is one of the first major meets of the swimming calendar and always attracts top talent from across the nation.
Joining the 300+ swimmers in the three sessions of competitive swimming were a number of International Stars and 2012 Olympic hopefuls including Rebecca Adlington, Joanne Jackson, Lizzie Simmonds, Liam Tancock, Fran Halsall, Ross Davenport, Grant Turner and many more up and coming stars of British Swimming.
The packed meet really benefitted from their presence on poolside, with many of the younger swimmers queuing for autographs, photos and advice on technique!
A big thank you to all of the swimming stars for their patience and courtesy with the younger swimmers and for taking the time to meet with them while they were busy preparing for their own races.
An exciting day of racing saw a total of 53 clubs taking part, with Nova Centurion emerging as top club ahead of City of Leicester and Loughborough University. Daniel Johnson (City of Derby) took top male honours by a single point from Hugo Lemar (City of Hereford) while Kristina Neves (Guernsey) was clear winner in the top female table.
Lincoln Vulcans swimmers acquitted themselves admirably in the presence of so many top swimmers, benchmarking their performance at the end of the first training cycle with numerous Regional Qualifying Times for the Winter Midlands Championships taking place during the first weekend in December. Several National Qualifying Times were also achieved and with many other swims within fractions of a second of National qualification it bodes well for another exciting season for the Vulcans swimmers.
With swimmers travelling from all over the country (and indeed abroad) it was a busy and long day of swimming and we would like to particularly thank visiting officials who helped ensure that the races proceeded smoothly and efficiently. Thanks also to the companies who supported the meet and helped us make the day such a success.
See you all again next year!
