National test for Vulcans

2011_british _champs_swimmersLINCOLN VULCANS are out in force this weekend at the British Championships in Manchester.

The club has five swimmers taking part in the event where they will be going head-to-head with world renowned competitors including long distance veteran and Olympic silver medallist David Davies, world record holder Liam Tancock, double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and former-Lincoln Vulcan, olympian and European champion Lizzie Simmonds.

Vulcans' head coach Fred Furniss is proud of the turn out.

'I am very pleased to be taking five swimmers to the event," said Furniss.

"This is an outstanding achievement for the individual swimmers and for the club."

The five Vulcans include Jack Burnell, 17, who will take on the top British swimmers in the 800 metres and 1,500m freestyle for a place in the finals.

Ollie Bitowt, 15, entered in the same two distance events, will also compete in the 100m and 200m backstroke, the 200m individual medley, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle as well.

Sprinter Hayley Williams, 17, will be challenging the field in the 50m breaststroke towards the end of the week while brother and sister Brad, 15, and Maya, 14, Westlake are looking forward to debut performances in the 200 backstroke and 50m freestyle respectively.

Ollie is relishing the chance to take on the best in the country.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to be at the championships in Manchester for the week and spending that time among the country's most talented swimmers," he said,

"It is a stepping stone from youth swimming into the senior swimming world and national representation and I plan to get the most I can out of the whole experience."

The British Championships run from March 5 to 12.
